JOSE LUIS MARTIN DESCALZO (Playwright) was born in Madridejos, Toledo, Spain in 1930, and died in Madrid in 1991. Priest, writer and journalist, he studied at the Seminary of Valladolid, and finished History and Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. He was ordained a priest in 1953. He taught Literature at the Seminary of Valladolid, where he also directed a theatre company. He was press correspondent in the Vatican during the Concilio Vaticano II. As a journalist, he directed the magazines Vida Nueva and Blanco y Negro, and the television program Pueblo de Dios in RTVE. His literary works belong to the "Christian Humanism" philosophy. He received the Nadal Novel Prize for La Frontera de Dios in 1956, in 1962 he received the Authors Theatre Prize, and in 1976 the Gonzalez-Ruano Journalism Prize. His theatre works include: La hoguera feliz (1962), a new interpretation of Joan of Arc, directed by Mario Antolin at the Teatro Nacional de Camara y Ensayo in 1969; A dos barajas (1972); El segundo juicio de Galileo (1978) and El Peregrino (2001). LAS PROSTITUTAS OS PRECEDERAN EN EL REINO DE LOS CIELOS (1986) was his greatest hit, premiered in Spain by the leading actress Elisa Montes. He also did the Spanish translation of Godspell (1974) by John-Michael Tebelak & Stephen Shwartz; and the musical adaptation of Fuenteovejuna, by Lope de Vega. His novels include: El hombre que no sabía pecar (under the pseudonim Martín Azcárate), Diálogo para cuatro muertos (1953), La frontera de Dios (1956), Lobos, perros y corderos (1978), and El demonio de media tarde (1982). His Essays include: Un periodista en el concilio, 1962-1965, Razones para la esperanza (1984), Un cura se confiesa, Siempre es Viernes Santo, Vida y Misterios de Jesús de Nazaret, Razones para la alegría, Razones para el amor, Razones para vivir, Razones desde la otra orilla, Las razones de su vida, Vida y misterio de Jesús de Nazaret. His Poetry includes: Fábulas con Dios al fondo (1957), Camino de la cruz (1959), Querido mundo terrible (1970); Apócrifo (1975); Apócrifo del domingo (1982); and Testamento del pájaro solitario.
